In a bid to save water, which has become precious due to shortage and rising mercury levels, a town panchayat in Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi district has decided to levy fine on those who waste water.

Karari Nagar Panchayat, about 200 km from here, recently adopted a resolution that allows imposition of a fine of up to Rs 1,000 on people who leave their water taps open. “People often leave their water taps open after the use....it leads to wastage of water,” said an official of the panchayat.

He said the municipal body decided to impose a fine of Rs 100 on first-time offenders. “Legal action would be initiated if someone commits the offence for the second time,” he explained. He said the panchayat would be undertaking a massive campaign to create awareness among people about the need to conserve water. “We will initiate a number of measures to make people aware of the shortage of water and its value,” the official said.

Kaushambi district has been reeling under severe shortage of drinking water since the onset of the summer. Water levels in the ponds and wells have gone down considerably. Many wells and hand-pumps have gone dry.

On top of this, the district has been experiencing severe heatwave for the past few days with the mercury hovering around 45 degrees Celsius.
