Sowing the seeds for a green future

Last Updated 25 May 2015, 14:06 IST

The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. And the second best time is now,’ believe the boys and girls of ‘Vanya’ group. Started on April 24, ‘Vanya’ is a group of college-goers who are doing their bit to save the greenery in the City. It began with one motto — planting for a green future.

It was just another day when a group of youngsters sat down to talk on issues concerning greenery. But this talk took an interesting turn when they decided to do their bit to increase the green patch. “The idea of starting a group to protect the greenery interested all of us and that’s when ‘Vanya’ was born. We sat to work and decided on collecting a minimum amount from the members to buy plants and the digging for a green future began,” says Abhiman, a member of ‘Vanya’.

This group of youngsters save some amount from their pocket money and take to planting trees around. They collect a minimum amount of Rs 30 and maximum of Rs 100 from the members.

With the collected amount, they buy plants, mesh required to protect the plants, water cans and other equipment. One particular day in the month, usually on a Sunday or a public holiday, they gather and start planting. They plant 30 plants at once in the surrounding area. “It is one plant for one day. Hence 30 in a month,” Abhiman explains. They have planted 30 plants in Basavanagudi and NR Colony area as of now.

Talking more about the plants, he explains, “We are planting neem and beech plants as they are abundant oxygen suppliers and air purifiers.” Once planted, the group take turns and start off with huge water tanks to nurture these plants. “We have bought 35 litre cans that we use to water the plants,” he explains.

There are 27 members at present and all one has to do to be a part of this go-green group is pay a membership amount of Rs 300.

“We have a logo and a badge that will be given to the members. Also after the membership, one need not pay anything for three months as it will be covered in the membership deposit,” he informs.

The group will carry on this plan till there is enough green and their next target will be to make the City garbage free. To be a part of this group, one can visit their Facebook page, ‘Vanya’
