India Inc on Monday hailed the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government’s pro-reform measures in the past one year with Ficci saying that the government’s pro-industry label was “pure rhetoric”.

“Without growth, it would be impossible to provide jobs to the 23 million young people who descend in the job market every month,” Ficci President Jyotsna Suri said.
Addressing a press conference on completion of the government’s first year in office, she said it had sparked a positive sentiment, restored investor confidence and established Brand India.

She, however, said it was a “tall order” for the government to improve the country’s ranking on the World Bank’s ease of doing business index. India is ranked 142nd on the ease of doing business index.

CII President Sumit Mazumder said, “In one year, the government has improved the economic situation dramatically as a result of which all major macroeconomic indicators are in sound territory.”

Godrej Group Chairman Adi Godrej said , “The government in the past year has taken unprecedented and innovative steps of a scale that could not have been envisaged earlier. It has succeeded in changing the economic calculus of the country by demonstrating that 120 million bank accounts can be opened at short notice or four lakh toilets can be built in schools in a year and so on.”

Executive Vice Chairman, Hinduja Group and past president of CII R Seshasayee said, “The flagship development programmes undertaken by the government accompanied by a series of policy reforms during its first year has laid a strong foundation for India’s economic resurgence to become the fastest growing major economy globally.”
