Army on Monday foiled an infiltration bid by militants from the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) into Tanghdar sector near the Line of Control (LoC) during which three soldiers and an infiltrator were killed.

A defence spokesman said an Army patrol challenged a group of militants after it noticed suspicious movement close to the LoC in Tandghar in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
“In the heavy exchange of fire that followed, the infiltrating group was beaten back leaving behind one dead terrorist from whom one AK-47, one pistol and other administrative items were recovered,” he said and added during the gunfight, four soldiers were injured of which three succumbed on way to hospital.

Reports said the operation was in progress. Sources told Deccan Herald a massive search operation has been launched in the area along the LoC to ensure that no militant has sneaked in.

They said that the infiltration along the LoC in Kupwara district has taken place despite inputs to the Army that the militants might try to infiltrate from second week of May when the mountain passes are still closed with snow.

The security agencies apprehend increased infiltration this year after number of militants in Kashmir Valley declined following successful operations by the security forces over the last few years.

Sources say 300-400 highly trained militants are waiting at the launch pads across the LoC to infiltrate. “They are trying to infiltrate from all the sectors,” they added.
