The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Haryana Police to expedite its investigation into the irregularities and identify the “beneficiaries” of the cheating in the All India Pre-Medical Test conducted by the CBSE on May 3.

A vacation bench of Justices A K Sikri and U U Lalit asked the state police to file its progress report on June 3. The court said holding fresh examinations could lead to chaos for six lakh examinees but at the same time indicated that it could think of cancelling exams if the investigators could not trace those indulged in irregularities.

“If we direct fresh examinations, the results and admission would get delayed. That would create further problem and it could lead to tremendous chaos. If there is lurking doubt about suspects and they are not able to identify the students (beneficiaries), we could think of it,” the bench said.

The court told senior advocate Jayant Bhushan, representing some of the candidates seeking cancellation of the test, to let the police complete its investigation and point out beneficiaries. The Haryana Police said that as many 72 telephone numbers were obtained on fake identity proof.

Those phones were used to make 358 calls to different parts of the country, while bluetooth as well as WhatsApp were employed for supplying answer keys to the candidates, who paid the money, the police said.
