Bengaluru received thundershowers and strong winds on Wednesday night, bringing down the temperature and leading to cloudy sky on Thursday. Citizens were relieved to get a break from the heat.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the City recorded 13.2 mm of rainfall while HAL airport received 11.1 mm and the international airport 16.2 mm. Yelahanka received 21.8 mm rainfall.

Further up till 5.30 pm on Thursday, Bengaluru City received 0.6 mm rainfall, recording maximum and minimum temperatures of 28.2 and 19 degrees Celsius, respectively. The normal maximum and minimum temperatures for the day were 33 and 21 degrees Celsius, respectively. HAL airport recorded maximum and minimum temperatures of 29 and 17.9 degrees Celsius, respectively, and the international airport 29.6 and 18.6 degrees Celsius, respectively.  On Thursday, HAL airport experienced strong winds blowing at 40 kmph at 8.15 am. Bengaluru City experienced winds blowing at 41 kmph in the northerly direction at 6.15 pm. According to Sunder Mahadev Metri, director, IMD-Bengaluru, these are pre-monsoon showers which will continue for the next two days.

They are caused by upper air circulation from Chhattisgarh to southern Tamil Nadu across south interior Karnataka which has now moved towards the eastern coast. It is because of this phenomenon that Bengaluru and the surrounding areas are experiencing thundershowers which are part of the pre-monsoon showers and will have no impact on the forthcoming southwest monsoon. The IMD has forecast the monsoon to hit Kerala on Saturday and Karnataka four days thereafter.
