Rlys to change refund rules

Last Updated 29 May 2015, 19:23 IST

The Railways will change refund rules for cancellation of tickets to make it passenger friendly. The new rules may allow 50 per cent refund on Tatkal tickets.

The national carrier will also make changes to give 50 per cent refund to passengers of premium trains. While some of the changed rules will be implemented from July 1, others may take time.

The changes that are being contemplated include instant refund of 100 per cent passenger fare on cancelling confirmed e-tickets.  At present, only 50 per cent of the amount is refunded and rest of the amount is given later.

“We are going to change rules and delivery system that governs the refund of passenger fare after a passenger cancels his journey. Passengers have been complaining against various rules that are in place,” said Member (Traffic) of Railway Board, Ajay Shukla.

“The case of Tatkal tickets are different. Tatkal is emergency ticketing and people should be ready to pay for it. However, it should not be too prohibitive to discourage the passengers.

We are considering the proposal to refund at least some part, may be 50 per cent, of the fare that has been charged from the passengers,” a senior official told Deccan Herald.
