Rush begins for seats in City's PU colleges

With the class 10 results for almost all the boards having been declared, pre-university (PU) colleges all over the City are seeing a surge in demand for various courses, especially in science and commerce streams.

At CV Raman Nagar’s Narayana PU College, which offers only science-stream courses, 90 per cent of the seats have already been filled.

“In all, we have seven sections in science based on PCMB and PCMC combinations with a capacity of 40 students in each section. Almost all of them have already been filled, while the rest will be filled within the next few days. Besides SSLC students, there is also a high demand from students who have passed CBSE and ICSE,” said Sunil Kumar, AGM of the college.

New Horizon PU College in Kasturinagar offers science and commerce and has three sections for each stream with a capacity of 80 students in each section. “We have received as many 800 applications for both streams,” said principal Edward Christopher.

There is also a huge rush for commerce. Outside St Joseph’s PU College, Cariappa Road, a group of three friends were checking their prospects of securing admission to the institution. “All three of us want to take up commerce, and this is only one of the two colleges we have applied to,” said Arvind, one of the three boys. The college offers courses in all three streams at the higher secondary level.

Vice-Principal C R Rajendra Deccan Herald the demand for all the streams is usually very high every year. “We have a total of 15 sections, of which one section is for humanities. We get thousands of applications for all the courses every year, and this year is no exception.”

Amidst the rush of students at Mount Carmel College, Palace Road, was Sharon Liza. “I have opted for commerce here and have also applied to others like Jain College and Jyoti Nivas College,” she said.


Apeksha K Jadhav, who scored 88 per cent in ICSE, has already secured a science seat at the college. “While I applied to colleges like Jyoti Nivas, Jain College and Bishop Cotton College for Women, I have already chosen Mount Carmel as I have heard that the faculty here is good,” she said.
