Bollywood film “Peepli Live” seems to be re-enacted in real life at the village of Aruna Shanbaug’s assaulter Sohanlal Bhartha Walmiki in Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur district, 400 km from here.

Mediapersons have been making a beeline in front of his house since Thursday after his whereabouts came to light. TV news channels are competing with each other to get a byte from Sohanlal and his family members.

His family said that Sohanlal had been missing since late Friday night.

“Employees of a TV channel took him (Sohanlal) away late in the night...his son Krishna was also with him,” said Ravindra, Sohanlal’s other son.

He said that the TV channel had assured them that Sohanlal would be back after a few hours but he had not returned so far.

According to the residents of Parpa, mediapersons have been flocking their village since Thursday. Shanbaug, who was in coma for 42 years after sexually assaulted by Sohanlal, died at a hospital in Mumbai on May 18.

Ironically, Sohanlal’s family members had no knowledge about the incident. For them Sohanlal is a simple and hardworking person, who would not hurt any one.

The residents of the village also did not know that Sohanlal had been convicted for assaulting Shanbaug and had spent seven years in jail.

They said that Sohanlal hailed from the neighbouring Bulandshahar district but had settled at Parpa some three decades back after his brothers grabbed his land at his native village. Sohanlal’s wife is from Parpa.
