The versatile poha

Flaked rice, also known as poha or avalakki is simple and easy to make, and easily digested. It can be used to make a  variety of dishes for a light and nutritious meal. Here are some simple recipes that you can try at home :

Mavinakayi Avalakki

This is a spicy and quick breakfast recipe. Thanks to the raw mango, it has a nice tangy, spicy taste.

Ingredients:

1 cup poha
1 capsicum finely chopped (optional)
5-6 green chillies, finely chopped
3-4 tbsp grated raw mango
Salt to taste
For seasoning:
1 tbsp oil
½ tsp mustard
½ tsp jeera/cumin seeds
1 tsp chana dal
1 tsp urad dal
2 tsp peanuts
hing- a pinch
curry leaves - a few
turmeric powder- a pinch
For garnishing:
1 tbsp grated fresh coconut
Few coriander leaves

Method: Soak the poha in water for 5-10min. Wash and drain the water completely. Heat the oil in the pan, fry the peanuts and keep it aside. Next add seasonings and fry till done. Add green chillies and
capsicum and stir fry. Once done add the poha and mix well. Add salt, coconut, raw mango shreds peanuts and coriander leaves to the poha. Mix well and serve hot.

Avarekai Avalakki

A simple dish to make, it is made from lima beans (surti papdi). This dish is both yummy and flavourful to eat.
Ingredients:
1 cup poha
½ cup avarekai(boiled)
1 tbsp oil
½ tsp. mustard seeds
½ tsp jeera
½ tsp chana dal
½ tsp  urad dal
½ tbsp peanut
5-6 green chilies, finely chopped
Few chopped coriander leaves
Few curry leaves
hing-a pinch
tumeric powder - a pinch
Salt to taste
1-2 tbsp grated fresh coconut
1 tsp lemon juice

Method: Soak the poha in water for 5 minutes. Wash thoroughly and drain the water completely.Heat oil in a pan, fry peanuts and keep it aside then add mustard seeds, after it splutters, add chana dal, urad dal, jeera, hing, turmeric and stir fry.Add green chillies, curry leaves. Add boiled avarekai, fry it for a while. Add soaked avalakki, salt and mix well. Add coconut ,coriander leaves, lemon juice, mix carefully. Serve hot.

Avalakki Fritters or Vadas

These are spicy fritters that are crispy and delicious to eat with some tea, perhaps on a rainy day.

Ingredients:

Avalakki/poha - 1 cup
Rice flour - 1 tbsp
Red chili powder - ½ tsp
Onion-1 finely chopped
Green chillies - 3 chopped
Curry leaves - 5 or 6
Cilantro - 2 tbsp (finely chopped)
Potato boiled-1 cup
Salt - as required
Oil - for deep frying

Method: Soak the poha in water for about 10-15mins. Once soft,drain the water.Next in a bowl,add the poha, grated potatoes,chilies,red chili powder, coriander leaves, salt, jeera, rice flour and mix well to form the dough.

Make small balls and flatten it. Set it on a plate. In a kadai, heat  oil, slowly slide in the vadas, deep fry till golden brown on both sides.Drain on absorbent paper. Serve hot with either chutney or sauce.
