When dinos and action eclipse cinematic value

The Jurassic Park cinematic universe seems to suffer perennially from inherent flaws: Nobody seems to learn from mistakes; it’s all supposed to be cutting-edge science but a lot of scientific thinking is absent; and nobody seems to give a hoot for human life until it’s too late.

Incidentally, these are the very flaws that make “Jurassic World” happen. Twenty two years after the original Jurassic Park was opened to the public, the island is now a seemingly secure tourist attraction, but people want more, and owner Masrani (Khan), who has been bequeathed the park, wants to give them exactly that.

At his bidding, Dr Wu (Wong) from the original film uses splices genes to create an “Indominus Rex” — a mix of several dinosaurs and (spoiler alert!) modern animals. However, as is the wont of an alarmingly large number of creature features, things get out of hand, and raptor-handler Owen and park security in-charge Hoskins — who are not on the best of terms — join hands to address the matter.

Meanwhile, the two young nephews (Robinson and Simpkins) of park-runner Claire (Dallas Howard) go off the beaten track, and she enlists the help of Owen in the field and Lowery (Johnson) in the control room to keep them from becoming dino-fodder.

There’s too much action on the screen for emotions to work, and the film feels exactly like the long tumultuous ride director Colin Trevorrow had probably envisioned it as. The novelty of dinosaurs has worn off — except maybe among the generation that hasn’t seen it on the big screen yet — and there isn’t much of a story. Add to that the three flaws mentioned earlier, and the film’s merits diminish exponentially!

However, “Jurassic World” works to an extent mostly because of the dino action, be they taking on humans or others of their kind. Another positive is the number of throwbacks to the 1993 film, to which this is supposed to be a direct sequel, minus the intervening films.
Take your kids to see them live the action you did two decades ago, and re-live it with them. But do not expect much more.
