Fake officer with genuine ID nabbed

A 32-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly impersonating as a Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Civil Service (DANICS) officer. Anurag Gahlot, who could not clear his Civil Services Examination, was inspired by Hollywood film Catch Me If You Can.

According to police, Anurag was nabbed after he himself made a PCR call on June 9. “The call mentioned that a DANICS officer was manhandled at Bindapur,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) R A Sanjeev.

A team from Binadapur police station responded to the PCR call and came to know that there was a quarrel between Anurag and a shopkeeper. The matter had been sorted out before the police team reached the spot. “Anurag then introduced himself to the police officers as a DANICS 2008 batch officer working as an Assistant Commissioner with the Enforcement Directorate,” Sanjeev added.

Anurag was carrying an ID card of the Union Home Ministry and gave his visiting card to the police team. However, the policemen found his behavior to be suspicious due to which an enquiry regarding his identity was initiated. “The list of DANICS officers was examined and Anurag’s name was not found. Enquiry from the Enforcement Directorate was done and they also denied,” Sanjeev said.

Police contacted Anurag over phone on June 12 and asked him to visit Bindapur police station.

When Anurag arrived at the police station, he was asked for his ID card. He presented his Union Home Ministry issued ID card signed by the Ministry’s Chief Security Officer. The Ministry was contacted and the Chief Security Officer confirmed that the ID card was genuine.

“Anurag was interrogated on how he had a genuine Union Home Ministry ID card without being an officer as it had serious security implications,” Sanjeev added.

Anurag told police that he forged signatures and stamps of a director-level officer of the Delhi government. “Anurag initially got an ID card for the post of SDM and then subsequently created a fake transfer order and got a renewed ID card of Assistant Commissioner,” Sanjeev said, adding that Anurag had appeared in the Civil Services Examination, but failed to get through.
