'Can't act against Terra Firma as BBMP itself was on wrong side'

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) cannot initiate any action against the Terra Firma off Doddaballapur Road for violating the tender condition as the BBMP itself was on the wrong side, said the BBMP Administrator T M Vijay Bhaskar.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of Janaspandana on Thursday, Bhaskar said the BBMP had agreed to send only 500 tonnes of waste everyday but after the closure of Mandur landfill, the Palike started sending 1,200 tonnes of garbage everyday.

“The firm (Terra Firma) did not have the capacity to process such a huge quantity of garbage everyday. So dumping of waste started in Terra Firma landfill as used to happen at Mandur landfill,” said Bhaskar.

He said in the next six months, challenges would reduce as three waste-to-energy units will become operational.

He added that there is some resistance at Gorur to a garbage processing unit, which the residents are opposing. The Palike is persuading villagers not to oppose the project. Regarding the Giddenahalli project, the contractor has been directed to speed up the construction of the garbage processing plant, which is going on at a slow pace, he added.
