The siblings from Goa set household items afire, drawing neighbours

In a bolt from the blue, two sisters from Goa, who were evading appearing before court in connection with some cases, were arrested after both of them accidentally set fire to household items in their flat on Kodigehalli main road on Tuesday night.

The sisters—Mary D’Mello and Stella D’Mello—were fighting over some personal matters. In a fit of rage, one of them set fire to some papers and old material stored in a room in their fourth-floor flat in Sterling Park, an apartment complex.

Not to be left behind, the other sister burnt a door mat outside the flat. As if their fight wasn’t enough to draw curious neighbours, the fire just made the whole matter all the more suspicious.

Seeing the fire and smoke billow from the building, residents just ran into panic and one of them called the police who then informed the fire brigade.

Fire fighters took more than 20 minutes to douse the fire. They also rescued the two sisters.

Later, as policemen sat down with the sisters to enquire about the fire, they had too many revelations to face. First, it emerged that the sisters had been previously arrested in an attempt to murder case registered at the Kodigehalli police station in April 2014.

The sisters, along with a cable operator named Chandrashekar, were arrested on the charge of assaulting Raju Khurana, also a resident of Sterling Park. He had claimed that the sisters and the man stabbed and beat him up on April 9, 2014, when he was going downstairs in the apartment’s lift. He said he had injured his head and limbs in the assault.

The sisters and their neighbour were not on good terms. The footage of CCTV cameras installed in the apartment complex confirmed the assault on Khurana, according to police.

The sisters were released later. They are wanted in some other cases too and had been served notices to appear before court. They were evading doing so ever since.

“It has been learnt that the sisters were absconding all these days and had returned recently. They have admitted that they are known for creating trouble for other residents,” a senior police officer said. As for the fire, the sisters are said to have told the police that it happened accidentally.

No one has come forward to make a complaint against the sisters about the fire, the officer added.
