Care for the plants this rains

Last Updated 25 June 2015, 16:07 IST

Monsoons are upon us and our days are filled with downpours, chilly winds and moisture-induced fallacies. While it’s time to say goodbye to scorching summer and enjoy the rains, it’s also time to pay some special attention to our little green friends. Plants need extra care and attention during the rainy season and here are some tips to help you do your bit more effectively:

Too much of anything is bad and the same applies to your plants, too. In case the plants are outside your home, bring in a protective sheet. But don’t cover the plants entirely and suffocate them. Make small

perforations to allow some light and small quantity of water.

Prevent waterlogging of all sorts in and around your
precious plants. In case of huge downpours, drain all the extra water immediately, or else it will turn into a breeding ground for insects.

Ensure the soil is well aerated by regularly upturning and
loosening the contents of the pots. You can also enlist the help of earthworms for this task.

If you decide to plant new saplings during the rainy
season, make sure you get plants that adapt easily to the weather.

If you have flower beds, make small gullies that can direct the extra rainwater away from the plants. But don’t make these pits too deep. Keep them as shallow as possible.

Pruning is an important job for the plants, especially during the monsoons. Keep your plants free of all dead leaves, shoots, branches. Otherwise, they will accumulate and rot in the rains.

Rains can wash away most of the important nutrients from the soil. So, after a heavy downpour, mix in some fertilisers with the soil to regain the lost nutrition.
So, this monsoon do ensure that your plants are as well protected as your home.
