Digvijay wants CBI to probe Vyapam scam

Congress leader Digvijay Singh has approached the Supreme Court seeking a CBI probe into the Vyapam scam in Madhya Pradesh in which 25 accused died under mysterious circumstances.

Singh told a press conference on Tuesday that he had filed a petition in the apex court contending that the Madhya Pradesh High Court-appointed SIT to probe the Vyapam issue was “ineffective” given the magnitude of the scam and involvement of top officials.

He has sought strict action in the matter given the fact that it involved the appointment of some 1,30,000 people in state government services over a period of time for which over one crore people have applied. “If former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala can be sent to jail for irregularities in appointment of 130 teachers, the role of MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan needs to be probed,” he said.

Asked whether the buck stops at the MP chief minister, he sarcastically said that Chouhan was a “poor little guy” who did not notice anything amiss despite a lot of things happening around him.

The Congress has accused Chouhan of complicity in the scam. Vyapam scam is a massive admission and recruitment scandal involving politicians, bureaucrats and middlemen. Several politicians including former education minister Laxmikant Sharma, a host of officials and scores of aspirants have been arrested in the case.
