Debt crisis turns Greece a tourist hotspot

Last Updated 01 July 2015, 17:31 IST

The economic crisis in Greece seems to have come as a blessing in disguise for leisure travellers in India as well as across the globe.

With the euro turning weak, Greece may turn out to be a much cheaper destination due to which tour operators see a big opportunity going forward.

“A weaker euro has made European destinations attractive for tourists. The travellers can enjoy more value for their money and enhanced spending power in these places. The favourable currency is also enabling tour operators to offer great packages with attractive offers,” Vishal Suri, Chief Executive Officer (Tour Operating), Kuoni India told Deccan Herald.
Any uncertainty/political situation makes travellers wary of the destination but with currently favourable euro, Europe including Greece has been popular with leisure travellers this summer, Suri added.

Cox and Kings believes that the turmoil in Greece will certainly help the company in promoting Greece as a destination for outbound customers.

“The possibility of Greece as a destination becoming cheaper is high which will assist us in promoting Greece as a destination for our outbound customers. We see this as an opportunity for leisure tourists who will benefit from a pricing perspective on account of the recent developments in Greece,” Cox and Kings said in an emailed statement.

“Cox and Kings is not scaling down any growth estimates and our Indian leisure business, international leisure, education, and Meininger have demonstrated resilience and robust growth with a healthy traction in this financial year as well,” the statement added.

Deep Kalra, founder and CEO of travel portal MakeMyTrip, believes that the lack of direct flights could act as a deterrent for many of the travel buffs to look at Greece as a good tourist destination.
