Mornings can't get any better

For many youngsters, the weekend is all about partying and waking up late on a Sunday. But around a year back, a group of youngsters who wanted to give their brains an ‘intellectual workout’ on Sunday mornings, formed an interesting group called ‘Creative Mornings’. After all, what could be better than a sweet breakfast and conversations with the City’s most influential people on the different aspects of life?

‘Creative Mornings’ is a breakfast lecture series hosted for the creative community of the City. Vikram Shenoy, a City-based entrepreneur, came across the concept when he went abroad.

The topic is decided at the headquarters of the group which is in New York and the lectures are then held everywhere else on a monthly basis.

Bengaluru was the first City in India to initiate this talk while Mumbai recently started the chapter.

The talks are held in association with Canvas Creations, a visual media company.
Vishwesh Shiva Prasad, one of the organisers, says, “While the rest of the world holds these talks on Friday mornings where people come in, have breakfast, attend the session and head to work, it didn’t work in the City unfortunately. We tried holding the sessions on Saturday but that didn’t work too well either. Hesitatingly, we gave Sunday a chance and luckily, it worked.”

The sessions are bringing in new people each time by just word of mouth and the team is thrilled.

“We already have over 600 people who are a part of the community,” adds Vishwesh. While most of the speakers in other countries are from a design background, we have speakers from all walks of life as Bengaluru is a diverse City with lots to learn and explore. “The session throws light on something new every month — it’s a great way to know the stories of people and their unique journeys,” says Anupriya Balikai.

This month, they collaborated with chef Madhu Menon, a restaurant consultant, food photographer and a writer, who spoke about cooking, designing, food photography and combining knowledge with creativity. Working on a complete sponsorship module, Studio 147, an experience design firm, hosted July’s Creative Mornings talk.

With a lavish spread of doughnuts, muffins, croissants, coffee and tea at Grand
Mercure Hotel, the morning lecture was a rather sweet one.

People of all age groups participate in these session, Karishma Rao, another organiser, explains, “We have had members as young as a tenth standard student joining us in these sessions. We also have senior citizens coming in. Though the people coming in depends on the topic and speaker of the month, we get to see a mix of people.” Bhagya, a media sub-titler, says, “My friend and I are not morning people but somehow, the last time we made an effort to attend the lecture! It was quite interesting and I try to make it as often as I can now.”

Divashi, a product designer, says, “My friends have been regularly attending the sessions but for me, July was the first one. It was great to see a mix of people, with similar interests and I can work with some of them in future too.”

Before every session, there’s an ice-breaker session. As soon as one walks in, he or she is given a name tag where they need to write down their names and their ‘deep, dark fantasy’ along with a number. They then have to find another person who has written the same number and serve them breakfast.

Sezel Lalwani, a digital marketing agent, adds, “I think the concept is brilliant. The places they choose for the talks are quite interesting — from art and working spaces to much more! The organisers are friendly and have great photos to share afterwards.

It’s a great learning experience where you get to meet some interesting people as well!”
