Scripting a new path

Last Updated 23 July 2015, 18:38 IST

Sandalwood director KM Chaitanya takes his own time to make a movie or tell a story but he makes sure that he tells only those stories that stir one’s emotions.

His stories have all the ingredients that make for a perfect commercial potboiler. Chaitanya’s earlier movies such as ‘Aa Dinagalu’, ‘Suryakaanti’ and ‘Parari’ stood out for their distinct narrative and unique concept.

The positive reviews and awards Chaitanya has received have only inspired him further to churn out movies that provoke people to think. His latest project, titled ‘Aatagara’, holds different connotations in different contexts.

“The word ‘Aatagara’ has different meanings. It means players, actors, hypocrites, cheat and in some context it means God as well. I have incorporated all these meanings in the film,” he explains.

The thought of making ‘Aatagara’ was triggered by the many reality shows hitting the small screen almost on a daily basis. “There’s news hitting the screens almost every minute and if there’s nothing happening then we live in an era where news is created and sold. There are different types of reality shows on television everyday and in some sense, isn’t life itself a reality show of sorts?” asks Chaitanya.

He reasons that people think they are living in a democracy and a free nation but freedom exists only in the mind. “We don’t have as much freedom as we think we do. There’s always a risk of one’s freedom and space being encroached. The film deals with this issue,” he states.

The film is a multi-starrer and Chaitanya says that all the actors have a substantial role to play. “Each member of the cast is not a star but an actor in the film. Anant Nag plays a very special part in the film. Everybody has something interesting and unique to contribute to the film,” he says.

Chaitanya feels he has been on a slow track and hopes to speed up a bit. “I’ve been a little picky and sluggish in finalising the scripts. I am hoping to change this,” he sums up.
