A visually impaired Muslim woman from Kerala, who was reportedly discriminated on religious grounds in Delhi, has sought corrective intervention from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal through a YouTube video.

Reem Shamsudeen is an assistant professor of English in a college affiliated to the Delhi University.

In the video posted on YouTube by Media Collective on Wednesday, the 30-year-old addresses Kejriwal and says when she was about to move into her rented flat in Delhi with her mother after the summer vacation, the landlord denied her entry stating that she could not rent the flat to a Muslim.

Reem had already paid the rental advance and was at the flat with her luggage. “(The incident) was a shocking experience considering Delhi boasts of its cosmopolitan and metropolitan nature all the time,” Reem says in the video.

Reem talks about how, during one of her visits to Delhi in February, the national capital was booming with hope on change under Kejriwal and the promise of Aam Aadmi Party’s ability to deal with various issues that included discrimination.

“I lived in Hyderabad for the past eight years and did my MA, M Phil and PhD at the English and Foreign Languages University… I have never for once experienced this level of discrimination based on my religion,” she says.

Based on her experience, Reem says she hopes thousands of students moving in from various parts of the country would not have to face similar “shameful and inhuman” experiences and urges the Delhi chief minister to look into the issue.

“I believe the state you administer, the Delhi you promised, accommodates every other citizen,” she says.

The video has clocked more than 2,800 views.
