There was a time on Indian television when talented actors like Shafi Imandar, Satish Shah, Aanjjan Srivastav and Tiku Talsania ruled the comedy scene. Whether it was Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, Idhar Udhar or Wagle Ki Duniya, these actors were at their best. But ever since the general entertainment channels came up, the definition of comedy and characters has changed.

The current crop of comic actors including Dilip Joshi of Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashma, Paresh Ganatra of Chidiya Ghar are the ones who call the shots in the world of comedy on Indian television. Paresh spoke to Sunday Herald about his life and times in television.

Paresh, who has done shows like Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka, Baa Bahoo Aur Baby, Jasuben Jayantilaal Joshi Ki Joint Family and Comedy Nights With Kapil, is seen in the popular role of Ghotak in Chidiya Ghar. Speaking about his character on the show, he says, “Through Chidiya Ghar we want to send out a message that every man has qualities of an animal. Ghotak is the eldest son of the family and has horse-like traits because he always runs and is in a rush. He is also little manipulative, clever but he has an emotional side. He is always there for his family.”

Talking about his inspirations as an actor, Paresh says, “I have never ever followed any particular actor or copied anyone. Because I believe in originality. If we follow someone’s craft, comparisons are likely, which adds to the pressure of an actor. But I adore the works of Charlie Chaplin, Mehmood and Johny Lever. They are all flawless and perform without any baggage.” Paresh also feels that nervous energy is important for an actor. “I like to experience some nervousness when I go to a set for the first time. When the director gives me a scene I just read it twice and then perform. I believe too much learning can ruin the craft, so I like to be spontaneous.”

Paresh’s love for acting started early while performing in college plays and later moving on to commercial theatre. When asked about his choice of projects, Paresh explains, “I always look at the role and the story. If I like the story then I immediately sign up for it irrespective of whether it’s a play, a TV show or a film. As an actor, I am still hungry, I believe I should get more pivotal roles.”

Paresh has also been a part of successful films like No Entry, Rowdy Rathore and Bol Bachchan to name a few.

Paresh is also a popular face on Comedy Nights With Kapil. The actor, who plays the role of Kapil Sharma’s brother-in-law, talks about the chemistry on the show. “Kapil and I have done Comedy Circus together for three years. When Kapil started conceiving Comedy Nights, he approached me. Working with him has been fantastic and he is also someone who gives you a lot of freedom. He is not just a stand-up comedian, but also an actor who knows his strength.”

Paresh is all set for his debut in Marathi cinema with the film Yes I can. “I always wanted to do a Marathi film as I was born and brought up in Mumbai. This film suited all my criteria. Recently, I also acted in Shyam Benegal’s Samvidhaan where I played the character of a 65-year-old politician.”

Clearly, Paresh is one-of-a-kind actor who can fit into any character with great ease.
