Security stepped up in Bastar in view of Naxals' 'martyrdom week'

Security in the naxal-affected Bastar region of Chhattisgarh has been intensified in the view of a call given by maoists to observe a 'martyrdom week' from tomorrow, police said today.

No untoward incident was reported from the insurgency-hit Bastar region, spread over an area about 40,000 sq km and considered a stronghold of ultras.

However, naxal pamphlets and posters, appealing to the cadres and people to observe the 'martyrdom week', were seen and recovered from some places in Bijapur and Sukma districts.

"Security has been beefed up in the forest interiors of all the seven districts of Bastar division - Dantewada, Bijapur, Bastar, Narayanpur, Kondagaon, Sukma and Kanker - as the ultras will observe the 'martyrdom week' between July 28 and August 3," a senior police official told PTI.

The outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist) is observing the martyrs' week in honour of its slain leaders, who have died in operations conducted by security forces.
Patrolling has been intensified in the border areas neighbouring Odisha, Telangana and Maharashtra.

"Naxals generally hold meetings and gatherings during this period to spread their propaganda, besides recruiting heads in their military wing and conducting training in core forests.

"However, keeping in view the situation of enhanced security forces operation they may alter their strategy, due to which security forces have be cautioned to be more vigilant," the official said.

Some Maoists pamphlets, banners and posters were recovered from Bhairamgarh and Modakpal area of Bijapur and Dornapal region of Sukma in which they have asked their cadres and people to contribute actively in observing the martyrdom week, he said.

Meanwhile, railway authorities, too, have decided not to run the passenger train between Vishakhapatnam to Kirandul beyond Jagdalpur amid fears of Maoist attack in the region, forcing commuters to travel by bus from Jagdalpur to Kirandul.

"The passenger train will not go beyond Jagdalpur, while a goods train will be run only during daytime," a railway official said.
