Stop sewage water from entering lakes: HC to BWSSB

Last Updated 27 July 2015, 19:54 IST

The High Court on Monday directed the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to submit more details on what it is doing to prevent sewerage water from entering into lakes in the City.

Hearing a PIL petition by Citizen’s Action Group, a Bengaluru-based organisation, a division bench of acting Chief Justice S K Mukherjee and Justice B V Nagarathna directed the BWSSB to explain the steps it had taken following an earlier order by the court. The bench also directed the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the Lake Development Authority (LDA) to co-ordinate with the BWSSB in this regard.

The counsel for the BWSSB submitted that a majority of the 110 villages, which were merged with Bengaluru to form the BBMP, lacked sanitary facilties and that was causing pollution.

He pointed out that indiscriminate drilling of borewells at these places was leading to exploitation of ground water and degradation of lakes, rendering them waterless.

The petitioner highlighted how sewerage water is polluting lakes and sought the court’s directions to the authorities concerned to clean them. The bench adjourned the matter.
