Key Godhra case accused held after 13 yrs

The Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of Gujarat Police on Monday nabbed an accused in the 2002 Godhra train carnage, Kasim Ibrahim Bhameri, who had been on the run for last 13 years.

Fifty-four-year-old Bhameri was one among the key accused who had set the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express on fire at the Godhra railway station on February 27, 2002, resulting in the death of 59 passengers. mostly karsevaks. Communal clashes followed the event across the state that saw several hundreds being slaughtered.

“Kasim was arrested from Dahod railway station, when he was coming back to his hometown Godhra from Madhya Pradesh, after participating in a religious function,” RK Amin, police sub-inspector, Ahmedabad ATS, said.

The ATS team later handed over Bhameri to Gandhinagar-based Special Investigation Team (SIT) for interrogation. Other than the train burning incident, the SIT is also expected to quiz him about his accomplices and those who gave him shelter while he was on the run.
