A rooster was “detained” for triggering communal violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur town, about 90 kilometres from here.

According to reports, eight people, including two home guards, were injured in the violence in communally sensitive Ludhaura locality in the town on Tuesday evening.

The police have taken a rooster and two others into custody in connection with the violence. Police sources said that the trouble started when the rooster, which belonged to one Ramugrah Sonkar, reportedly attacked a boy of a particular community.

The boy hit the rooster with a stone in a bid to scare it away. Ramugrah’s son Shera, who was in the vicinity, got angry when he saw the boy hurling stone at the rooster and allegedly thrashed him.

A few hours later, the boy’s parents and a dozen others allegedly attacked Ramugrah and assaulted him and his son. As Ramugrah’s community members too reached the spot, a clash ensued in which both sides indulged in heavy stone pelting.

A large police contingent was rushed to the spot to control the situation and the men in uniform had a tough time in chasing away the warring sides. The police said that Ramugrah and Shera were booked in connection with the violence and they were taken into custody along with the rooster. The rooster, however, was allowed to go home a little later. Security personnel in strength had been deployed in the area to maintain order
