Unfulfilled: His last wish was to meet daughter

Yakub  Memon’s last wish of meeting his daughter Zubeida could not be fulfilled, but Nagpur jail authorities reportedly arranged for a telephone call with her on Wednesday night.

However, there was no independent confirmation about the phone call. Besides, he had a very emotional meeting with his elder brother Suleiman Memon who visited the jail.

As Yakub turned 53 on Thursday, around midnight the jail authorities organised a birthday cake for him, but it is not yet clear whether he touched it or not. 

Even though Yakub and daughter had not stayed together for a single day, they are emotionally connected.

Last week, when Yakub’s wife Rahin Memon (42) and daughter Zubeida (21) met him in jail, he asked her to pursue MBA from some reputed institution. Yakub was inclined towards studies. He had a master degree commerce and was qualified chartered accountant. While in prison he completed MA in English literature and political science.

“I want to meet my daughter,” he told prison authorities on Wednesday night after Suleimen met him. During the meeting, he asked his soft-spoken and mild-mannered elder brother to take care of his wife and daughter after his death. 

Suleimen too was an accused in the case, but was acquitted. However, his wife Rubina Memon was convicted and jailed for life.

Accordingly a phone call was arranged and he spoke to his daughter, who is turning 22 this Friday. It was a very emotional phone call, sources said.
