What's on the cards?

Friends forever

Another ‘Friendship Day’ is round the corner. Whether one believes in it or not, one celebrates it or not, it certainly is a good excuse to log out of Facebook or WhatsApp and be in meaningful company.

One knows that ‘Friendship Day’ is on the threshold when colourful bands, charms, teddy bears and other gifts scream from stores. Come Sunday and some youngsters are pulling all stops to make the day memorable and live it to the fullest.

College-goers like Tilak, Clinton, Gayathri and Anjana have already planned on what they will be doing, apart from exchanging cards and tying friendship bands.

“Dinner and movies are a definite plan. The day is about being with friends and celebrating that special bond,” says Anjana.

Clinton adds that friendship bands are very popular and so are exchanging cards. He says, “I remember, how in the past, the number of friendship bands you had after the day  decided how popular you were. While you don’t need a day to celebrate friends, this is still a good excuse to party and let your hair down with the people you love most.”

Sharmista BS, a youngster, says that friendship means a lot to her. In the past year, whenever she felt confused about certain decisions, her friend Padma Kumar had guided and stood by her. “I feel lucky to have a friend like her. You can learn so much from the friends you have and Padma’s been a big inspiration in my life. She’s been my strength and is the perfect example of how one can strike the right balance in life.” Sharmista plans to spend some quality time with Padma on the day, and also plans to take her to a concert.

Even young stars like Suraj Gowda, a fresh face in Sandalwood, says that despite his busy schedule, he will take time off to chill with friends.

“I plan to be with a few friends and my closest buddy, Rakshit, who stood by me through the years. He is into music direction and we discuss movies and acting at any given time. It has been a long journey and he has been a part of many low and high points in my life. We talk to each other almost everyday and catch up wherever we can,”
says Suraj. He adds that Rakshit “always gives a non-biased opinion about everything and is always there”.

In this age of technology, keeping in touch with friends has become easy. Bharath Govindarajan, a BBA student of The Oxford College of Management, says that new applications on phones help in faster communication. “But I make it a point to keep my phone away, when out with friends. While technology is a good thing, it can be an interference when one is out with friends. I cherish the time I spend with my friends and always try to make the most of it. This ‘Friendship Day’, I will be out with friends for dinner,” he says.

“It’s too difficult to find true friends nowadays. Though one doesn’t have to celebrate the day, I would love to gift my friends something hand-made and just let them know in whatever way possible that they mean a lot to me,” adds Chandini.
