The rustic feel

Authentic flavours

Barely a few months old, ‘Kudil’, a restaurant on Church Street, delivers homely food that tastes like it has come straight from an ‘ammachi’s’ kitchen in Kerala. It was started by two working professionals, Vijeesh Uooralath and Mujeeb Ruhiman, who have a passion for cooking delicious food.

“We love to cook, and we love to serve, that’s our real passion,” says Vijeesh. True to its name, the restaurant is very small with a few large, colourful traditional paintings that add colour to the space. The food is authentic, with no-frills and the customers relish this. There is no official menu yet as Vijeesh says that they wanted to see what dishes were popular. So the hosts recite a list of the day’s specials to customers and the choices include flavourful ‘Thalassery chicken biriyani’, ‘Kerala parathas’, ‘aapam’ and ‘chicken stews’.

“We want to stick with very homely, authentic food that gets a smile from people,” says Vijeesh. Fresh ‘kaapa and fish curry combos’, ‘puttu’, ‘beef fry’ and ‘thalis’ are available as well. You can wash the meal down with a fragrant, zesty cup of ‘sulaimani tea’. The food is also quite affordable, with the combos starting at Rs 100. Mujeeb has quit his job while Vijeesh races from Electronic City to ‘Kudil’ after he finishes his day job, and works until midnight, returning to the restaurant at 7 am. As business picks up, he plans to quit his job to focus on the restaurant full-time. Both of them spend the free time they have experimenting and learning new recipes that quite literally come straight from their mothers’ kitchen.
