Social activist questions CM's silence in Lokayukta issue

SPS to move High Court against Special Investigation Team's 'inaction'

President of the Samaj Parivarthana Samudaya (SPS), S R Hiremath, suspected the intention behind Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s silence in the Lokayukta issue.

He questioned why is the chief minister not asking Lokayukta Y Bhaskar Rao to step down, in the wake of alleged corruption in the Lokayukta office.

Addressing a media conference here on Friday, the social activist said at least five ministers in the Cabinet — the chief minister himself, K J George, D K Shivakumar, Dinesh Gundu Rao and T B Jayachandra — are facing enquiry by the Lokayukta in various cases. And now they are misusing the opportunity to weaken the institution by effecting an amendment to the Lokayukta Act, he said.

“From the beginning, since the corruption cases in the Lokayukta were brought to light, the chief minister has been repeating that he would recommend a CBI inquiry only if the Lokayukta wants it. Would the Lokayukta seek CBI inquiry in a case in which his son Y Ashwin is the prime accused? The State government is acting in an irresponsible manner by not handing over the probe to the CBI,” Hiremath said.

Pointing out that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by ADGP Kamal Pant is directly under the supervision of the ministers, as it functions under the government, Hiremath said, only a CBI probe will bring out the truth.

“Since a month, the SIT is dillydallying the probe. Most of the files and documents from the Lokayukta office have been transported to some unknown destinations, publicly, even as the visual media was recording the on goings. Only a couple of days ago, the prime accused had been arrested. This would have given the accused sufficient time to destroy evidence against him. I will file a public interest litigation (PIL) in the High Court seeking action against the officials of the SIT over their inaction,” Hiremath said.

Regional secretary of Jana Sangram Parishat (JSP) Prasanna and Gangadhara Kustagi of SPS were present on the occasion.
