Lodha panel seeks more time

Last Updated 31 July 2015, 20:14 IST
The Justice R M Lodha panel has approached the Supreme Court seeking five more months to examine the rules, practices and procedure of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and for suggesting requisite reforms.

The SC had on January 22 formed the panel headed by former CJI Justice Lodha and comprising former Supreme Court  judges Justice Ashok Bhan and Justice R V Raveendran.

In its punishment stated on July 14, the panel imposed life ban on Gurunath Meiyappan, who was the Chennai Super Kings team principal and Raj Kundra, co-owner of the Rajasthan Royals for their involvement in betting and suspended both the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchisees for two years.

The apex court had then also asked the panel to examine and make suitable recommendations to the BCCI for such reforms in its practices and procedures and such amendments in the Memorandum of Association, Rules and Regulations as may be considered necessary and proper.

In a fresh application, the panel sought five more months to complete the remaining tasks assigned to it.

“There have also been extensive interactions with the office-bearers of the BCCI as well the various state associations. For a broad-based approach, sittings have been held in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata from April 2015 to June 2015,” it said.

“The endeavour was somewhat limited with the absence of key cricket officials and players because of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 and the IPL season that followed shortly. Keeping in mind the nature of the mandate and the extensive studies and interactions to be conducted, the committee anticipates that some more time will be required to complete the tasks,” it said.

The committee is also to give its report about IPL COO Sundar Raman, who is still being probed by a team led by Central Bureau of Investigation SP Vivek Priyadarshi, who had headed the 2G scam investigation.
