Yakub hanged, but part of trial yet to be finished

Last Updated 31 July 2015, 20:40 IST

One of the conspirators of the March 12, 1993 serial blasts, Yakub Memon has been hanged to death but part of the trial — in which underworld dons Abu Salem and Mustafa Dossa alias Mustafa Majnu stand trial — is yet to be completed.

The two parts are known as Bombay Bomb Blast Case (BBC) Part I and BBC-Part II. In the final outcome of BBC-I, 123 of the 100 accused were convicted and 23 acquitted. The BBC-II involves accused who were arrested or extradited or deported later.

Besides Abu Salem and Mustafa Dossa, the others include Mohammed Tahir Merchant alias Tahir Taklya, Firoz Khan, Riyaz Ahmed Siddique, Karimullah Shaikh and Abdul Karim Siddique. Since the BBC-I had so many accused – the trial was conducted by the special TADA court in a barrack inside the high security Arthur Road jail in Mumbai. The BBC-II trial, however, is being held in the special TADA court inside the Mumbai Sessions Court.

One of the critical things that has been discussed in the court is that whether the evidence recorded during the trial in BBC-I be used in BBC-II. Incidentally, in the main trial there were two prosecution witnesses — PW1 and PW2 (name withheld) —  however, in the second case there are no approvers.
