The Khardah railway station in the North 24 Parganas district, around 20 km by train from Kolkata, turned into a battleground on Monday as two competing demonstrations on the railway tracks turned ugly, leading to stone-pelting.

The ensuing clash left six security police and GRP personnel injured as they tried to intervene.

“Trouble began when men and women commuters launched separate demonstrations on the tracks. Seven people have been arrested,” said a GRP official. While the women passengers were protesting against the railway’s decision to convert four ladies' coaches of the Ranaghat Matribhumi local train into general compartments, the men sat in support of the decision.
