Seven farmers commit suicide

 As many as seven farmers committed suicide on Monday.S G Lakshmappa (55) hung himself to death at S G Koppal in Kadur. He owned 4.5 acres of land and had borrowed 4.70 lakh from a bank nine years ago. He had also obtained a loan of Rs 4.50 lakh from another bank. The crops on his land had started to wither away as three borewells dried up 15 days ago.

A 65-year-old farmer, who had consumed poison on August 17, breathed his last in Hubballi on Monday. Ramanagouda Channappagoudar of Shiraguppi owned 2.5 acres of land and a loan of Rs two lakh.

Debt-ridden Rangaswamy (45) of Bethur village in Hiriyur taluk of Chitradurga district immolated himself. He had borrowed loans from banks and moneylenders.

Channabasappa Banakara (55) ended his life at Hadrihalli village of Haveri district.  He had borrowed Rs 70,000 from a bank and Rs 3 lakh from private persons.

Vittala Dundhappa Dhanagara (35) committed suicide in Siddapura village of Bagalkot district.  He was cultivating two acres 33 guntas of land which stood in his mother’s name. He had borrowed Rs one lakh. Hanumanthappa (54) hung himself to death at Neralagi in Shikaripur of Shivamogga. He owned four acres of land  and had borrowed loan of Rs 37,000. He could not repay it due to crop loss.

Seventy-one-year-old Basappa Hadari Urpagudi committed suicide by consuming poison at Tirlapura village in Navalgund taluk of Dharwad district. He had sowed onion and cotton on his 10-acre land which failed for want of rains. He is said to have loans totalling to Rs three lakh.
