None attends public hearing on Penukonda tragedy

No member of the public turned up for the hearing held by the Commissioner for Railway Safety (CRS) on Thursday, with regard to the accident involving the Bengaluru-Nanded train, which was hit by a granite-laden lorry on Monday.

Railways officials said that not a single witness from the public presented himself before the CRS and now, anyone having information pertaining to the accident can write to the CRS or fax him.

The accident occurred near the Penukonda Junction in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, claiming five lives, including that of MLA Venkatesh Naik and a railway employee.

As part of the enquiry, a public notice had been issued by the CRS, requesting people to provide any information they have about the incident.

Statements of the government officials concerned and railway employees related to the incident, including staff posted at the level crossing, station master and locomotive pilots, were recorded on Thursday. S K Mittal, the CRS, said that the next step would be to submit a preliminary inquiry report.
