For the newly elected women councillors, this Varamahalakshmi is not just another festival. It gives them an opportunity to express their gratitude to the people who voted for them.

R Mahalakshmi, 21, the youngest councillor, will be visiting houses in her ward Hosahalli to interact with residents and know the issues plaguing them. She said Friday also happens to be the birthday of her father and hence, it is a special day for her. “I visited a non-governmental organisation (NGO) sheltering mentally challenged children on Thursday as a precursor to the festival,” Mahalakshmi said.

Manjula from Adugodi ward said that she had postponed her Varamahalakshmi celebrations to next week and would instead go on a procession in her ward on Friday. “As people have trusted and voted for me, it is my duty now to listen to their problems. I will visit all the localities and cover as many houses as possible.”

Mamatha K M, the new corporator from Thanisandra ward, said that she would celebrate her victory and also the festival with her party workers. Mamatha said that she would be personally going to her locality and visit members of a few residents’ welfare associations (RWAs) who helped her during the election campaign. “The Shabarinagar RWA and residents from Hegdenagar have supported me. Hence, I will be interacting with them and inviting them home,” she said.

A few other councillors said that they would celebrate the occasion at home and spend time with their family members. Lingarajapuram councillor Lavanya Ganesh Reddy who won for the second time said that she would observe the festival in a simple way by decorating the Varamahalakshmi idol, performing puja to it and preparing sweets and other savouries. Vani Rao, the corporator from VV Puram, advised the public to be cautious while disposing of waste and maintain cleanliness. “Though I do not celebrate the festival, I request people not to throw festival waste on the roads,” she said.
