Delhi sees 300 dengue cases in just one week

Over 300 cases of dengue were reported in the past week with the total number of cases climbing to 831 cases this season. August alone has reported 778 cases. The data compiled this season is till August 29.

Till now, North Delhi Municipal Corporation has recorded the highest number of cases at 320 with 114 cases reported last week. South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has recorded 220 while East Delhi Municipal Corporation has seen 73 cases. Narela and Najafgarh have reported 30 cases each last week.

Malaria cases have also shown a rise with 29 cases this season. This month 10 malaria cases were recorded, according to data released by the SDMC.

Hospitals across the city have reported a steep rise in admission cases of patients suffering from dengue infection. The Delhi government had issued a notification instructing hospitals to press more employees into service in the tertiary care hospitals. 

The dengue cases reported in August has hit an all-time at 778 high since 2010 when 885 cases were reported during the corresponding month. In August 2012, four dengue cases were reported while 142 and 11 cases were recorded in August 2013 and 2014 respectively.

This year the areas under the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) which houses VVIP areas have recorded 53 cases with 11 cases being reported last week. Heavy mosquito breeding was found in hospitals, including AIIMS, RML Hospital, Safdarjung and Lady Hardinge Medical College. The council had also issued notice to several departments in the sprawling Presidential Estate after heavy breeding of mosquitoes was found on the premises.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has meanwhile found over 1,40,000 houses positive for breeding. The corporation has sent legal notice to 1,15,611 households and institutions for mosquitogenic conditions.

Of the total dengue cases this season, 760 patients were from Delhi while 71 patients treated for dengue infection came from other states. The civic body has recorded two deaths till now. Two other deaths were reported by Deccan Herald earlier, which have not been recorded by the civic body so far.
