Mathews asks for more time to deliver wins

Last Updated 01 September 2015, 18:00 IST

Right through this series, Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews has led his side from the front but failed to get much support from a young side. For a second straight match, the all-rounder scored a century and once again saw it go in vain.

While requesting time to allow his young side to settle, Mathews hailed the Indians for their triumph. Excerpts.

On leading a young side: It’s going to be a difficult task. We haven’t got that many seniors in the side. We will take lot of time and we need to get the processes right. It will be tough when you are playing quality oppositions. We have played six games and lost four. It’s going to be tough no doubt, but we will fight hard and plan things out for the future.

On his role as senior batsman: I have played a few games now. I have played about 52 Tests. Little bit more experienced than some of the other guys in the team. Now it’s past Sanga and Mahela (Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawarene) era and others need to step up. Now it has to be a collective effort.

On top order not getting runs: It’s very disappointing. The bowlers have done a really good job throughout both series (vs Pakistan and India).
