Prasad Attavar, the head of Rama Sene, a fringe outfit, was arrested on Thursday for posting a comment on Facebook in support of the killing of outspoken Kannada scholar, Prof M M Kalburgi.

The City Crime Branch (CCB) of Mangaluru police arrested him after registering a suo moto case against him based on his Facebook comment. They later handed him over to the Mangaluru North police.

When contacted, Mangaluru Police Commissioner S Murugan said that Prasad had posted a comment, stating that Prof Kalburgi was killed for speaking out against Hindu religion and others too would meet the same fate if they spoke out against Hindu religion. “Following a tip-off, we registered an FIR against him,” the commissioner said. To a query, Murugan said that the police would investigate similar messages being circulated on social media and take suitable action against the persons concerned.

Attavar was one of the prime accused in the 2009 infamous pub attack in Mangaluru. At the time, he was associated with the Sri Ram Sene founded by Pramod Mutalik. He was arrested and released later. Thereafter, he floated the Rama Sene.

On Monday, just a day after Prof Kalburgi was gunned down at his house in Dharwad, Bhuvith Shetty, a Bajrang Dal activist from Bantwal near Mangaluru, was arrested for tweeting in support of the brutal killing and warning Kannada critic K S Bhagawan that he was the “next target”.

S Murugan, Mangaluru Police Commissioner: The police will investigate similar messages being circulated on social media and take suitable action.
