Power cuts throw life out of gear in City

City of no light: With power shortage, load-shedding is here to stay for several more days

Even as Bescom has announced a four-hour scheduled power cut for the City, as far as residents are concerned, it still remains an unscheduled power cut since they are not aware about the timings.

While Bescom officials state that power crisis continues to be grim, the frequent power outage has hit the routine life of people across various sections in the City.
Beginning from professionals who have to cancel their work-from-home option owing to power cuts, to inordinate delay in laundry services or elevators in apartments that get jammed raising safety concerns, the perils of long hours of power outage are plenty.

In fact, it is not so much the power cut but the unscheduled cuts that is affecting people. Speaking to Deccan Herald, Ramesh, a resident of Frazer Town said that in his area there was been no power since morning on Wednesday. G Seetharam, a resident of Govindarajnagar shared that they were facing a minimum of five to six hours of power outage. “There are no fixed timings. Water heaters and grinders stop in between due to sudden cuts affecting the routine.” The situation is similar across the city.

Find the schedule
The residents are unlikely to get an immediate respite from frequent power cuts. However, from midnight on Wednesday, Bescom would publish the power cut schedule for every sub-station on its official website.

One can get to know their sub-station by referring to their electricity bills. In case of any difficulty, residents can call the helpline 1912, according to an official statement from Bescom. Bescom Managing Director Pankaj Kumar Pandey said the four-hour schedule for power outage remains (two hours for industrial and commercial connections) but it is being done according to a pre-decided schedule.

“In places where the power cut has extended beyond four hours, it could be due to transformer maintenance works. That too takes about four hours. Hence, such places might have seen about eight hours of cut. However, these are only stray cases and it is not happening every where,” he said.

He added that he was personally monitoring the distribution control centres to ensure an even distribution.
