It seems Sandalwood cannot look beyond the seamy underbelly of Bengaluru. Even as one heaved big sigh of relief that rowdy flicks have had their run, you have Om Namah on the Kannada marquee.

By the way, do not be taken in by the title and troop in expecting some mythological or religious fare on the cards. The title is a misnomer. For, debutant director-actor Vijayendran’s Om Namah, too, reflects and rejoices in its tale on the life and crimes of a rowdy.

What’s horrendous is, here is a lad who harbours visions of becoming a rowdy while in school itself. So you have Rahul from that impressionable age taking to crime, and there is no looking back thereafter.

That being so, what can Preeti, saved by this street scum from miscreants, do to reform the bloodthirsty lout? She dutifully falls in love with him. Further, learning he is a rowdy, she tries to reform the slumdog.

But as the film, and director, would like to press home, once a rowdy always a rowdy, a man who has lived by macchu and langu, meets his nemesis the same way.

This mind-numbing saga — where blood flows like river and people are felled like lambs at slaughterhouse — is an assault on one’s sensibilities. It is better to leave Om Namah alone and seek more meaningful pastures for engaging entertainment.
