After a long gap, the State released 252 prisoners from jails across Karnataka. Around 147 prisoners were released from the Bengaluru Central Prison at Parappana Agrahara on Thursday.

“The 252 prisoners include two women. They were released based on their conduct and behaviour. Convicts who have completed 14 years of imprisonment and are above 45 years of age are entitled for release. They were reviewed before their release. It was a long-pending issue and finally the government order in this regard was issued on Wednesday,” a senior official from the Prisons Department said.

Additional Director General of Police (Prisons), Kamal Pant, said, “Except for two prisoners, all have been released. Of these two, one is out on parole, he will have to report back and complete formalities while the other will be released after he deposits the fine amount.”

Home Minister K J George, who was present at the programme held at the Bengaluru Central Prison on Thursday, hoped that the released convicts would continue to lead a peaceful life. “We are confident that the convicts will lead a normal life and bring a good name to the society,” he said.
