Froth from Bellandur lake bothers residents again

Last Updated 26 September 2015, 18:53 IST

The rains on Friday night led to heavy frothing at Bellandur lake near the Ammanikere waste-weir on Saturday, blocking vehicular movement.

Polluted to the core, the Bellandur lake was in the focus for the second time when the froth filled the air all over the area much to the inconvenience of residents and commuters.

People living by the side of the lake complained that the froth caused burning and itching sensation when they came in contact with it.

Whenever there is a heavy rain, most lakes start frothing due to high contamination. Bellandur being the biggest cesspool of sewage and industrial waste, coupled with rampant encroachment, frothing is massive.

Sources in the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board said the frothing was mainly because the clean water mixes with highly contaminated water which has detergents, acids, chemicals used for colouring clothes and toxins.

The biggest lake in the City, which spreads over 834 acres, is a victim of official apathy. Officials have apparently colluded with land grabbers, who are trying to usurp this lake.

Yoga Priya, an advocate, posted pictures and a video of the froth blocking a view of the bridge at Ammanikere waste-weir on his Facebook page and got many likes. He said he got these pictures and a video through WhatsApp from his friends.
