More medical seats have opened up in government medical colleges in the State for undergraduate medical seat aspirants.

As many as 67 additional medical seats are now available for MBBS admissions, with the State government on Saturday receiving the list of unfilled seats from the All India Pre Medical and Dental Test.

These seats belong to Karnataka’s share of seats in the All-India exam.
Apart from the medical seats, two dental seats have also been added to the State government’s seat pool.

The department of Medical Education has now forwarded the list of seats to the Karnataka Examinations Authority for conducting an extended round of counselling to fill up these seats.

All-India quota

As per regulations, the State government reserves 15 per cent of the seats available in its government medical and dental colleges to be filled up through the All-India quota.
Officials in the Medical Education department told Deccan Herald that this year, there were around 1,750 medical seats available in the government medical colleges in the State.

Of this, 15 per cent was given to the All-India quota. As for dental seats, since there is only one government dental college in the State, that is the Government Dental College, Bengaluru, of the 60 seats available in this college, 9 seats were reserved for the All -India share.

Of these, two have now been returned to the State government’s pool.
As per Supreme Court directions, the last date for admissions to medical colleges has been extended from September 30 to October 7.

Candidates to benefit

This would also benefit candidates who have sought admissions to Sapthagiri
Institute of Medical Sciences, the seats for which were approved only on September 29 by the Medical Council of India.

“Since it was announced in the last minute, the counselling was done in a hurry and several students who had got the seat were unable to take admissions last minute. Now, those students too will get time to join the college,” an official of the Karnataka Examinations Authority explained.
