Struck by the gems

Last Updated 06 October 2015, 18:25 IST
There is science behind everything. And Sapna Singhania wanted to know everything about the science of gems. Born and brought up in Bangkok, she grew up in a ‘gem of a family’ — they have been in the gem and jewellery business for the last 40 years. This dazzle in the DNA, undoubtedly, got transferred to her and currently, she is a connoisseur and designer of gems that are marvellous, wearable representations of different cultures and monuments from across the world.

Says Sapna, “I grew up watching the art of jewellery-making in our factory. The meticulous process caught my interest and I was hooked on to it.” Her eponymous line of diamond and semi-precious jewellery has a global clientele and is a communion of precious metals with Burmese rubies, Champagne diamonds, multi-coloured sapphires and various other semi-precious stones.

Intricate and classy, her jewellery stands out in the crowd and reflects glamour and elegance. Suited for a free-spirited woman, her designs are light, flexible, original and innovative. They are fashionable yet traditional and each piece is unique. “My designs do not cater to a particular season. They are for keepsake and are forever,” she says.

Completing a course in Gemology from the Gemology Institute Association in Bangkok, she understands the intricacies of gems and is able to create unique forms with them. A versatile name in the industry who has showcased her talent for over 20 years now, Sapna takes inspiration from her travels across the globe.

Her recent collection, ‘Pièce de Résistance’, comprises invisible set jewellery that presents a flawless fusion of art and craft, highlighting the meticulous craftsmanship of setting precious stones.

“This collection is a mix of art decor and contemporary designs with rubies, emeralds, sapphires, diamonds and rose cut sets in 18 carat gold.”

Not adorned just to ‘hide the wrinkles of a woman’, her designs are timeless and she says, “Our target audience vary from little children to middle-aged women. They cater to various sections of the society and are not limited to a particular age group. My designs suit all occasions, from destination weddings to cocktail parties, brunches and red carpet events.” Multifaceted and unique, she wants her designs to suit everyone. “I want to bring in all the possibilities of designing a gem,” she says.

She looks forward to entering the Bengaluru market with a bang and win the appreciation of fashion-forward women of the City. Sapna’s designs will be showcased at the ‘Evoluzione’ store on October 15 and 16. She adds, “We hope to have a successful response and look forward to coming back.”
