Last Updated 06 October 2015, 20:36 IST

The Ministry of Urban Development has selected 37 consulting firms, including Crisil, KPMG, McKinsey and Mott MacDonald for preparing detailed project reports for 88 cities proposed to be developed as Smart Cities.

The remaining 10 cities in the north-eastern states, as well as the Union Territories, will follow suit by this weekend.

The government has announced the names of 98 cities to be developed into Smart Cities, having core infrastructure needed to enhance urban living.

Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir are still to nominate a city each under the programme.

Foreign companies or their Indian associates are working in connection with the preparation of Smart City plans for most of the cities, said a statement.

The selected consulting firms will prepare proposals under the supervision of urban local bodies and state governments based on review of previous plans and interventions.

The project report will contain area development action plans and financing plans for the complete life cycle of the proposal.

All city-wise plans will be evaluated in the second stage of the “City Challenge” competition for identifying the top 20 cities for financing during the current financial year.

While KPMG will prepare the action plan for the New Delhi Municipal Council area to be developed as a Smart City, McKinsey will do it for Pune.
