Four people were injured when a group of men drinking outside a shop in the Jheel  Khuranja main market in east Delhi opened fire after an altercation with a waiter on Monday night.

According to police, no arrests have been made yet but some people involved in the fracas have been identified.

After the firing, local residents came on the road and vent their anger by stone pelting and damaging shops and vehicles, said police.

Lathicharge
Police lathicharged the protesters, fracturing the right hand of a local resident.
Trouble started when five to 10 men arrived in two SUVs and were drinking liquor in front of a property shop, said an onlooker.

They ordered chicken biryani from a restaurant across the road. One of them allegedly complained about the taste, and hurled abuses at the waiter.

“As the waiter said something to him in reply, the man kicked him in his abdomen. Seeing their colleague being hit, all employees of the restaurant rushed towards the men who had kicked the waiter,” said Sonu, a local resident.

When the assailants saw a group of people moving towards them, one of them whipped out a pistol tucked in his pants, and shot at the group,” said Sonu, a local resident.

Gunshots were heard across the area, and people ducked for cover. Some hid behind vehicles parked there, said an eyewitness.

Eyewitness account
According to onlookers, the entire incident lasted for 10-15 minutes, after which the culprits fled in their vehicles.

Local residents blamed police for the incident, saying they had complained several times about undesirable activities in their area.

People who arrive there from outside fight after getting drunk. There is betting on cricket matches that often leads to tense situations and sometimes brawls, said a local resident.

“Every night people come here and drink liquor standing in front of Sahil Properties. They come in their cars and SUVs and park them on the roadside, leading to congestion. They mainly come here to enjoy themselves and sometimes do betting on cricket matches also,” said Vicky, a local resident.

Police are looking for the culprits, and an FIR under section 307 IPC (attempt to murder) against unidentified people has been registered at Krishna Nagar police station.
