Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity may shut down thirteen orphanages run by them as the government is planning to derecognise them.

These orphanages had refused to give its children to single and separated people for adoption.

Women and Child Development (WCD) Minister Maneka Gandhi said on Thursday, Missionaries of Charity has refused to comply with the provisions related to adoptions by single, separated or divorced people, as reported in Hindustan Times.

“They have cited ideological issues with the adoption guidelines of the country but we are persuading them because they are valuable, good people and have experience," said Maneka Gandhi.

It all started when the Central Adoption Resource Authority received complaints from two single parents from Assam and Bihar. The single parents complained that they were not allowed to adopt children from the orphanages of Missionaries of Charity.

It is being reported that the Missionaries of Charity itself has written to the Central Adoption Resource Authority seeking de-recognition of some of its orphanages.
