A fetish for fitness

Last Updated 12 October 2015, 18:32 IST
Bodybuilding has become a global phenomenon and ‘BodyPower Expo 2016’ is hunting for models across the country this month. Meanwhile, the CEO of ‘BodyPower’, Nick Orton, who was in the City, sat down with to talk about the growth of fitness worldwide.

How would you rate the fitness level in this country?

It’s very impressive to see how much India has grown over the years. I’ve been coming here for the last four years and each time I come, I see a massive improvement. This year, it’s the third edition of ‘BodyPower’ and we have a large number of contestants. I don’t think it would have been possible a few years back.

You’ve worked with many Bollywood celebrities. Do you think they’ve helped promote fitness?

Definitely; they are an essential part of the training. Bollywood actors have a huge fan following and use their ability to spread the word and influence people. I admire people like John Abraham. He is very dedicated about health and fitness and keen on passing whatever knowledge he has. This shows that no matter how old you are, you can be fit.

Is there anything about the Indian lifestyle that you would d like to change?

The main thing is the diet. There is a variety of food for one to indulge in, but everything should be taken in moderation. Make your food as healthy as possible and balance what you eat. The middle-aged people need to be more responsible and inspire the future generations.

What is your fitness regime?

I start quite early. I’m fortunate enough to have a gym at work, so I use it whenever I get a break. I also make sure to not sit all the time but get up and walk every half an hour. And in the evenings, I do some cardio and walk my dog.

Do you have any advice for busy corporate professionals?

I believe that everyone can make time for what they want to do if they put their mind to it. It doesn’t mean that one should go to the gym everyday.

Simple acts like walking to your destination instead of taking a bus, following a diet etc. are things that anyone can do. One needs to realise how important it is for them to exercise and stay healthy — everything else will fall in place.
