Last Updated 16 October 2015, 19:50 IST

Protesting the death of a biker who was run over by a BBMP truck carrying garbage on Thursday, residents blocked the Tumakuru-Doddaballapur National Highway by placing the body of the victim on the road near Adinarayana Hosahalli on Friday.

The victim has been identified as Ramesh, a resident of Tumbenahalli. He was coming from Tumakuru, when he was hit by the truck and died on the spot. After hitting the biker, the truck driver lost control over the vehicle and ran into a roadside ditch.
As a result, the truck overturned and the driver managed to flee the spot.

The protest was organised under the banner of Karnataka Janashakthi Vedike, which intensified the agitation. Hanumanthe Gowda of the Vedike said the garbage transporters have exceeded their limits as they drive recklessly and in an inebriated state.

He accused claimed that the police were hand-in-glove with the garbage transporters as they have been unable to identify the driver even 24 hours after the incident.

Two smugglers arrested

The police have arrested two men who were trying to sell red sanders worth Rs 2.28 lakh inside the compound of a government hospital in Bagaluru. The arrested are Prem Chand, a resident of Madanapalli, and Varun, a resident of Thottambedu in Andhra Pradesh. On a tip-off, the Bagaluru police raided the hospital premises on Tuesday and recovered red sanders weighing 152 kg and a car. The police said the duo had brought the wood from Tirupati. Chand was also involved in a case of smuggling red sanders in Andhra Pradesh and was out on bail. A case has been registered under Sections 62, 65, 80, 104 of the Karnataka Forest Act, Section 144 of the Karnataka Forest Rules, and Section 379 of the IPC.
