A day after a sub-inspector was stabbed to death in Nelamangala near here, the police have identified and obtained vital clues on the suspects, Madhu (19) and Girish Babu (42).

A police officer told Deccan Herald: “The duo went to a relative’s house in Nelamangala and stayed there for a while after killing the SI. When asked about blood stain on their clothes, they told that they met with a minor accident. Later, they boarded a goods vehicle. They might have sneaked into Andhra Pradesh. A team has been sent there.”

“Babu is an habitual offender and has committed crimes in Mandya, Bengaluru, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru and other places. He is involved in over 42 cases and was sent to jail twice. Babu and Madhu’s mother share an intimate relationship and she helped him to obtain bails. Babu is involved in a crime in Vidyaranyapura,” the officer added.

A senior police officer said: “The duo have several associates and they have all switched off their mobile phones. One Santosh was picked up from Chikkabidrakallu near Peenya. We are yet to verify his connections with Babu.”

It was initially suspected that the person accompanying Madhu was his father, which has been ruled out. ADGP (Law and Order) Alok Mohan clarified: “We have neither taken anybody into custody nor made any arrests so far. We are verifying some people and their background.”

Thousands attended sub-inspector Jagadish’s funeral which was held around 1 pm on Saturday at Mallapura village in Solur Hobli, Ramanagara district, with full state honours.
